ANC provides no better life for all
It would seem that Tito Mboweni, pictured, overemphasised the need to trim the numbers of our bloated public wage bill; but he has a valid point.
The fiscus is stretched to the limit, and if he meant to include the liabilities of municipal debt and the failing SOEs, our negative operating expenditure – which includes the interest payable on our sovereign debt – suggests the figure at 80% of budget is not an exaggeration.
The radical demands of the trade unions are unrealistic. While their call for President Cyril Ramaphosa to trim his Cabinet and reduce the salaries of departmental heads makes sense, the amount saved is miniscule in comparison to the waste through incompetence and corruption, which contributes to a massive loss to Treasury.
The remaining amount available to provide for our burgeoning welfare cost, plus financing defence, police, healthcare, education and housing, makes a mockery of the ruling party’s promise of a better life for all. Ted O’Connor
