DA hopes Plato can restore stability
The Democratic Alliance (DA) is scrambling to restore stability in its rattled Cape Town caucus ahead of incoming mayor Dan Plato’s term of office, which officially begins on Tuesday.
Plato, who was sworn in as a councillor yesterday, said he was confident, despite the chaos arising from a number of councillors resigning in solidarity with former mayor Patricia de Lille.
DA spokesperson Solly Malatsi told The Citizen: “The councillors will be replaced as soon as possible to restore the political stability in the city to deliver on the mandate the people [of Cape Town] gave us.”
As Plato was being sworn in, yet another councillor, Brett Herron, resigned.
He echoed a sentiment once shared by De Lille, that the party had abandoned its core values of freedom, fairness and opportunity and diversity.
