Brace for more festive season carnage on roads

-

No political party has a plan to deal with what is a huge problem, writes Richard Benson.

There is little time left for our politicians to put in place measures to stop another holiday season bloodbath on the roads in December and January. Nothing has been done about speed limits and the nationwide shortage of traffic police which together account for three quarters of our road carnage.

The naming and shaming in the press of convicted drunk drivers was stopped, fuel levies to pay for the road carnage increased and appeals for rescreening of the famous police camera action TV series on prime time TV have been ignored.

Speeding and drunk driving deaths, which are homicides, are sugar-coated and dismissed as “accidents” and no political party has an effective plan to end South Africa’s road carnage by simply copying other countries like Sweden, the United Kingdom and Australia.

How shameful!
