Last week’s call by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) for drunk drivers to spend time behind bars, other than those in pubs, if implemented, will certainly reduce drunk driving deaths. But if the RTMC is serious about road safety, it will also insist on lower speed limits and more traffic police. Together these measures will dramatically reduce our road carnage also the RTMC and others must ensure that drunk driving and speeding deaths are no longer described in the press and on radio as “accidents” as this gives the false impression that road carnage is accidental when it is not.
