Britain’s car washers ‘no more than slaves’

– Hand car washers in Britain should be forced to apply for licences to combat the abuse and enslavement of workers “in plain sight”, lawmakers said yesterday.

Authorities are doing too little to stop “flagrant” labour abuses in 20 000-odd car washes, where “a spectrum of exploitation” exists, parliament’s environmental audit committee said.

Thousands of workers in the car washes are estimated to be slaves. – Reuters
