Britain’s car washers ‘no more than slaves’

– Hand car washers in Britain should be forced to apply for licences to combat the abuse and enslavemen­t of workers “in plain sight”, lawmakers said yesterday.

Authoritie­s are doing too little to stop “flagrant” labour abuses in 20 000-odd car washes, where “a spectrum of exploitati­on” exists, parliament’s environmen­tal audit committee said.

Thousands of workers in the car washes are estimated to be slaves. – Reuters
