GET FESTIVE: JOBURG IS THE PLACE TO BE

- Citizen reporter

It’s all about music, the legends, fashion and art.

One Source Live festival is set to explode with great music, art, fashion and photography as it returns to downtown Joburg with a knockout line-up today at 1 Fox Street in the inner city.

On the bill is the BET award-winning S’Java; hip-hop maverick Shane Eagle, DJ PH; the inimitable Nigerian musical sensation, D’banj, and the leaders of the Gqom nation, Distruction Boyz.

Topping it all with a not to be missed throwback to a unique time in the African pool of creative excellence, Kwaito legends, Trompies.

The festival’s creative revolutionaries Khuli Chana, Sho Madjozi, Trevor Stuurman and Osborne Macharia return to the festival with new installations and musical collaborations they believe their fans will rave about.

The multimedia festival is expected to unfold on multiple stages and platforms in a celebration of African creativity as a driver of positive change in the world.

The Absolut Art Bar, the festival’s epicentre, will be a curated art and performance space by day, transforming into the headline stage after dark.

The Discovery stage will have Madjozi hosting a specially curated set of performances and live recordings of new collaborations with budding artists, building on her amazing material from the first festival.

Creativity goes back to its source in the Street Art Zone with art installations, a street performance stage, fashion pop ups, and street photographers.

Tickets cost R200 and are available now at Webtickets (086111-0005). As Africa counts down to the epic end-of-year celebration that is Afropunk Joburg on December 30 to 31, the show organisers have added legendary performers and global DJs of note to the line-up.

One South African newcomer will get to join the Afropunk superstars on stage at Constitutional Hill thanks to Joburg Battle of the Bands, an event the public is encouraged to attend on November 30 and December 1 at Carfax to choose two winners from eight finalists.

Legendary members of South Africa’s music scene, Maskandi master Phuzekhemisi of KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Town hip-hop pioneer DJ Ready D are new additions to the festival line-up.

Hip-hop hit-maker Kwesta has also been added to the bill.

What would a party be without DJs spinning the hottest sounds across genres, countries and eras?

On the decks this year is Pretoria hit-maker DJ Maphorisa.

France’s Anais B made such an impact at last year’s event that she is back to serve up more beats.

Also dj’ing is TYGAPAW, a Jamaica-born, Brooklyn-based multi-disciplinary artist and producer.

Representing Cape Town’s southern suburbs is K-$, with Kenya’s Coco.em, and Johannesburg’s Deniece Marz and Phatstoki also expected to rock the party.

Empangeni-born electronic musician Muzi spends most of his time overseas, but he will be back for Afropunk Joburg.

Also travelling to SA for the festival are BBZ (Bold Brazen Zamis), a queer curatorial collective and art party from London.

These artists and DJs will join The Internet, Thundercat, Flying Lotus Kaytranada, Thandiswa, Public Enemy, YoungstaCPT, Dope Saint Jude, FAKAZA, Moonchild Sanelly, Big Freedia, Nomisupasta and BCUC at the festival.

Of special note is the 3D show that the Los Angeles-based electronic music producer and film-maker Flying Lotus is bringing to Afropunk Joburg.
