Miss SA’s outfit ruffles feathers
FOR PAGEANT: THUMBS-DOWN FOR BLUE CRANE DRESS
Twitterati unhappy with national costume for Miss Universe contest.
Tamaryn Green’s pride in her Miss SA national costume for the upcoming Miss Universe pageant was short-lived. Yesterday, after the outfit was revealed in Sandton, a wave of negative comments were posted under images of it across all social media platforms.
The feathered, powder-blue costume was inspired by the country’s national bird, the blue crane, and Green worked with designers from The Costume Department to create the look.
The designers who created Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters’ national costume also came up with this look and considering that Nel-Peters took the crown last year, many are hoping for a back-toback win.
The Miss South Africa official account has since taken down the Instagram post which had the bulk of the negative comments about the dress.
As soon as photographs of the outfit hit the web, locals weighed in, with most asking her to change the costume.
According to a statement issued by Sun International, Green’s national costume was designed by Malikah Hajee and Lloyd Kandlin from The Costume Department.
“More than 1 000 bluish grey and black feathers have been hand-placed on the costume and resemble underwing feathers,” the statement read.
“The headpiece is encrusted with crystals depicting the beak.
“The custom feather print fabric is designed locally.

“The structured, tailored jacket is reflective of the esteem that blue crane feathers are held in within some African cultures such as Xhosa, Zulu and Ndebele.
“Chiefs were bestowed with the honour of wearing blue crane feathers for their acts of bravery and hunting prowess.”
