YEAR-END AUCTION: A TREASURE TROVE OF GOODIES TO SUIT EVERY TASTE AND WALLET

Sale kicks off today with booze, cigars and furniture and ends on Sunday.

The Silly season is upon us. As 2018 draws to a close and people start thinking of gifts for the festive season, look no further than Old Johannesburg Warehouse Auctioneers’ yearend auction.

A three-day auction from today until Sunday is filled with treasures great and small. A wonderful experience for the connoisseur collector and novice alike!

At 1pm today more than 300 lots of vintage wine, whiskey, brandy, champagne, port, cognac, armagnac, cigars, humidors and related paraphernalia will go under the hammer.

The bulk of the collection is from the estate of the late Al Stricke of the famous Fisherman’s Grotto restaurant, which won American Express Best Restaurant 10 years in a row.

The cigars hail from the estate of one of the biggest privately owned cigar collectors in South Africa.

The festivities continue from 9am tomorrow and the session is filled to the brim with some of the best furniture that this year has seen – Victorian (a 3.4m Early Victorian extension dining table with 12 original chairs – very rare!), industrial, retro, Italian and Danish designer pieces, English and French.

The rest of the session is made up of fantastic ceramics, beautiful silver, shimmering glassware, carpets, clocks and collectables.

This session also includes vintage cars, motorbikes and automobilia section.

Some of the highlights are a 1980 Red MGB Roadster, 1991 Reliant Scimitar Sabre (one of only two in SA, only 70 worldwide), 1959 Triumph Bonneville and a 126 Ford Model Tudor.

The art session then starts, featuring an exciting selection of international and South African contemporary and traditional art.

More than 100 lots include Adriaan Boshoff, Otto Klar, Frans Claerhout, Sydney Carter, Sidney Goldblatt, Gerard Sekoto, Gregoire Boonzaier and Maurice van Essche.

An exceptional piece is one of the largest Eleannor Esmonde-White paintings to come on auction. The artist was best known for her depictions off women.

And there is a beautiful early Neil Rodger entitled The blue settee which is conservatively estimated at R90 000 to 150 000.

Also on sale is a very large selection of bronze sculptures from the likes of Allen Hallett, Danie de Jager, Cornelius Bosch, Arend Eloff and Laurence Chait.

Treasure hunt Sunday kicks off at 9am with a trove of items that will keep customers busy for hours.

The stand-alone jewellery and watch session begins at 2pm with 400 glittering lots.

Many beautiful rings set with diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds, tennis bracelets, necklaces and more are on offer.

Worthy of special mention are a magnificent 47.7ct diamond necklace and a 3ct emerald cut diamond ring.

A range of watches and fine fintage collectors bags from Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Burbury and Marc Jacobs will also be sold.
