Report on China threat ‘baseless’

– Chinese media yesterday hit back at a US academic report urging the US to retaliate to counter what it said was China’s widening campaign for influence which threatened to undermine democratic values.

The report said China’s ruling Communist Party had, in recent years, “significantly accelerated” the investment and intensity of its global influence-seeking efforts. President Xi Jinping has adopted an “increasingly aggressive posture on the global stage”, it said.

China’s Global Times said the threat assessment was unfounded. “Chinese infiltration into the US the report describes does not match China’s objective aspirations,” it said. – Reuters
