Gang linked to stolen gold to stay behind bars

Eight men arrested in connection with possession of gold concentrat­e appeared in the Stilfontei­n Magistrate’s Court yesterday, North West police said.

Colonel Adele Myburgh said the men, who are aged between 22 and 44, were arrested during a multidisci­plinary stabilisat­ion operation in Khuma on December 6.

“During this operation, one ton of crude gold was seized after being found in the possession of the accused.

An abandoned transforme­r as well as a Volkswagen Amarok was also seized by police.

“Further investigat­ion revealed that the recovered vehicle was stolen in September in Germiston,” she said.

The case was postponed to January 10 and the eight men were remanded in custody.

In another operation on December 7, Themba Dywili, 30, was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition in Kanana near Orkney.

“He appeared in the Orkney Magistrate’s Court today and was remanded in custody until December 18.”

She said during the operation dangerous weapons such as knives were seized. – ANA
