Winx might get beaten this week

-

– Wonder mare Winx steps up her “farewell to racing” campaign tomorrow when she takes part in a barrier trial at Rosehill Racecourse over 900m.

Winx trialled is nothing like Winx racing. She has won her past 29 races in a row but has won just two trials out of a career total of 22.

However, she will still have the attention of the racing world as she makes her first public appearance for 2019.

Given that she is a rising eight-year-old this autumn, her trial will be eagerly scrutinised, but the word from her trainer, Chris Waller, is that he cannot see a change in the horse since her spring campaign – in which she won a record fourth Cox Plate.

Winx has nine rivals in the trial, headed by Group 1 winners Alizee and Ace High.

It is expected Winx will trial once more and possibly have a race-day exhibition gallop before she goes for her 30th victory in a row in the Group 2 $250,000 Apollo Stakes over 1400m at Randwick on 16 February. –
