Floods expected to hit Joburg soon

-

Although no accidents were reported on the roads yesterday morning in Johannesburg, motorists were warned to drive carefully as floods were expected due to the heavy rain.

“Motorists must drive with caution, keep a safe following distance and keep their headlights on because it’s very dark in some parts,” the Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s Wayne Minnaar said.

The downpours arrived as Eskom implemented load shedding that has resulted in many traffic lights across the province not working.

Fin24 reported yesterday that Eskom would implement stage two load shedding between 8am and 10pm, the fifth consecutive day of rotational power cuts.

Stage two load shedding allows for up to 2 000MW to be shed from the national grid.

Forecaster Bransby Bulo said there could be flooding in Centurion, Pretoria.

There have also been heavy rain in Limpopo.

Other affected areas include the Vhembe, Blouberg and Mopani district municipalities.

Bulo said heavy rain were expected in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga until today, but this might extend through to the weekend.

“The areas that had the most rain were in the eastern parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, where about 60mm of rain were recorded yesterday,” Bulo added.

He said more rain was predicted today. – News24
