The Citizen (Gauteng)

Australian Conference

-

The Aussies didn’t enjoy a good run last year, with the Waratahs leading the charge by finishing third courtesy of the conference system. They were followed by the Rebels (ninth), the Brumbies (10th) and the Reds (13th). While the Waratahs won their home quarterfinal 30-23 against the Highlanders in Sydney, they were beaten 44-26 by the Lions in the semifinals at Ellis Park. The Tahs will again be conference favourites but the biggest noises from Down Under have emanated from the Rebels, who under South African coach Dave Wessels narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season, while they have also gained the services of experienced flyhalf Quade Cooper (above). The Brumbies have gained flank Pete Samu from the Crusaders, while the Reds have not only lost Cooper, but also prop James Slipper to the Brumbies, lock Kane Douglas to Bordeax and flank George Smith to the Bristol Bears. The Sunwolves remain the weakest link in the conference.

Likely winners: Waratahs
