As Ole Gunnar Solskjaer moves closer to being appointed full-time manager of Manchester United, it is worth remembering their incredible record since the 3-1 loss at Anfield on 16 December that precipitated the sacking of Jose Mourinho.
Solskjaer was loaned to United some three days later by Norway’s Molde. He started with a 5-1 away win at Cardiff City and has gone on to amass a record of eight wins and two draws in his 10 Premiership games in charge.
It has taken United from the depths of despair under the taciturn Portuguese to a position of strength on the EPL table and very much in contention for a place in next season’s Champions League, which looked a long shot at Christmas.
And they are through to the quarter-finals of this season’s Champions League after their amazing victory over PSG midweek.
United are currently fourth in the EPL, one point ahead of Arsenal who host them at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
But with an injury crisis at Old Trafford, highlighted by the youthful line-up they were forced to field in the game in Paris, their great run and a place in the top four is under severe threat.
Arsenal, who have not had a decent record against the Reds Devils of late, will be sensing their opportunity, especially at home.
The Gunners had a similarly golden run after losing their opening two games of the season. They then won seven league games in a row and went 14 matches unbeaten before they lost at Southampton - ironically on the same day Mourinho was taking charge of his last game for United.
There was a brief erratic spell from Arsenal, but last weekend they got a draw away at Tottenham and their last four league matches have delivered 10 out of a possible 12 points. They must be fancied to take three more over Solskjaer’s men on Sunday.
Before that there’s a bonanza Soccer 13 pool tomorrow, which will be fuelled by a carryover and could soar as high as R34 million. EPL log-leaders Manchester City look a banker bet in match one.
