Brie Larson comes into her own as the kick-ass super hero who takes on some pretty evil forces in this fresh new origins adventure.
Set in the ’90s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is taken from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It follows the incredible journey undertaken by a human named Carol Danvers (Larson), who is known as Vers.
She is transformed into a powerful electrified entity on the planet Kree which is plunged into a galactic war between two alien races. Vers assembles a small cadre of allies who find themselves at the centre of this unstoppable maelstrom.
After a hazy and confusing dream opening, the movie settles down as we are transported to Kree where we meet Danvers (or Vers as she is known). She seems to be an integral part of the population – but she has a secret.
With her is her mentor, military commander Yon-Rogg (Jude Law). This green-hued individual with the luminous eyes is not all he seems to be, and his true colours (so to speak) are revealed as the story unfolds.
Vers has spent six years living on this planet and is unable to remember much of her life before Kree. She does know, however, that she was rescued from an earlier crash by Yon-Rogg who guided her and her new-found powers.
Vers survives another crash landing after an aborted mission. This time she finds herself climbing from the wreckage outside a Blockbuster video store in California. It’s Earth and it’s 1995.
She meets a young Nick Fury, played by a sceptical Samuel L Jackson, who has been digitally “de-aged”. He is working as an agent for S.H.I.E.L.D.
Though Fury has a strong personality, he is turned into putty whenever he’s in the presence of a ginger alien cat named Goose. And great things happen here.
Directed with style by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, from a story book by no
fewer than five screenwriters, Captain Marvel pays tribute to the late Stan Lee as it unleashes
a magnetic force to save the planet. This production boasts strong performances from its diverse cast, a narrative with a great deal of soul laced with humour and an impressive array of CGI mastery, making this Captain Marvel a truly enterenterprise. taining
