SMALL SCREEN: INTRIGUE, HUMOUR AND OTHER-WORLD
Three great Netflix shows chosen and rated by us. Just hit play.
With over a 100 awesome original Netflix shows and movies to choose from, you may find selecting which ones to watch daunting.
We’ve done the legwork for you and singled out three series that you really should be streaming right now.
And the best part … we’ve even ranked them for you:
STRANGER THINGS: 2 SEASONS, 17 EPISODES, 8.9 OUT OF 10
The Duffer Brothers’ show pays homage to the early ’80s Steven Spielberg movies (think Goonies and E.T.) and feels both familiar and new.
It’s about a young boy (Will), who is kidnapped by a creature and his group of Goonies-like best buddies who befriend an alien-like girl with telepathic powers to help them find Will.
It is great PG horror/sci-fi, just like the blockbusters of the early ’80s, but for those who didn’t grow up in the era the series may not hold as much appeal.
MINDHUNTER: 1 SEASON, 10 EPISODES, 8.6 OUT OF 10
Mindhunter is based on the origins of an actual FBI behavioural science unit set up in the ’70s and ’80s to study serial killers.
It focuses on young Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Holden Ford who takes a keen interest in psychology which, in turn, grows into an interest in the psychology of serial killers.
Mindhunter is a fascinating exploration of the origins of FBI’s interest in sequential killers.
Fans of series such as Hannibal and Dexter will definitely appreciate the great acting and attention to detail.
SEX EDUCATION: 1 SEASON, 8 EPISODES, 8.5 OUT OF 10
This British teen comedy, which is almost a live-action adaptation of the animated Big Mouth series, is committed to exploring every cringeworthy and taboo topic associated with sex.
The series follows a sex therapist mom (Gillian Anderson) and her son (Asa Butterfield) navigating their way through those uncomfortable “talks”.
The subject of sex is a comedy goldmine, so laugh-out-loud moments are many.
Despite being more recognised for her serious roles in The X-Files and Hannibal, Anderson’s comedic timing in Sex Education is spot-on.
