Stand for Winx

-

Australian super-mare Winx will be celebrated by Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club (ATC) following the announcement of a new lawn stand named in her honour.

On the same morning as the announcement of the Winx Stand, her jockey Hugh Bowman was named in a class of 10 to be inducted into the Australian Racing Hall Of Fame later in the week.

Winx and Bowman have ridden into Australian sporting folklore in the past four years with a winning streak of 33.

The great mare had 20 of her 37 wins at Randwick. The stand in her honour will be positioned at the 200m mark, connected to the Queen Elizabeth Stand, at the position where she hit the front in most of her winning surges.

“It is a great honour to have Winx recognised in this way,” owner Peter Tighe said. The ATC also has plans to build a statue at Rosehill, her home track.

The new stand will have a capacity of more than 5000. The slab of the stand will be laid after The Everest in October and it will hopefully be opened for the 2020 edition of that race.

Bowman, meanwhile, will join the Australian Racing Hall Of Fame in Brisbane on Friday night after a career which has so far included 88 Group 1 wins to date, including a Japan Cup on Cheval Grand and two Hong Kong derbies.

“It’s an absolute privilege and more than a bit humbling,” Bowman said.

Bowman is joined by Brent Thomson as jockeys to enter the Hall Of Fame, while legendary Queensland frontrunner Vo Rogue, Balmerino, Hall Mark and So You Think will be the horses inducted.

John Meagher and Des McCormick are the trainers to be inducted, while former Victoria chief steward Pat Lalor and Edward and Sydney Williams - who were the driving force behind the Cairns Amateurs meeting - will be acknowledged in the associates category. –

But said he only recently entertained the idea of becoming a jockey, having initially believed he would grow too heavy.

"Early on I wanted to become a trainer, I thought I was going to be too heavy to be a jockey," Lloyd said.

"At about age 14 I thought I might as well give this jockey thing a go.

"I didn't go down the traditional route with ponies or anything, I basically just learnt how to become a jockey, I rode trackwork for Toby Edmonds on the Gold Coast and that's where I first rode thoroughbreds.”

Lloyd is required to ride in at least 20 official trials before applying to Racing Victoria’s Apprentice Skills Panel for his licence to ride in races.

Meanwhile, his father is expected to appeal a 16 meeting suspension for careless riding incurred aboard Outback Barbie in Saturday’s Group 1 Doomben 10,000.

As it stands, the 57-year-old will miss several Group 1 meetings, including the Kingsford Smith Cup and the Queensland Oaks meetings. - seek a stay of proceedings.

"He had a flawless ride in the Kentucky Derby and there's no reason that the stewards should have given any discipline to him," attorney Sean Deskins said.

"He did everything that he was required to do and that was within his power to control the horse." Saez was cited for failing to "make the proper effort to maintain a straight course" in the race at Churchill Downs.

Country House, a 65-1 chance who crossed the line second, was declared the winner with Maximum Security demoted to 17th of the 19 horses.

The stewards' ruling comes a week after the racing commission denied an appeal of Maximum Security's disqualification by co-owner Gary West. The commission's swift denial came hours after West announced Maximum Security would not run in this weekend's Preakness at Pimlico in Baltimore.

West and his wife, Mary, said in a statement late last week they were evaluating their legal options. –

Mohammed bin Rasheed al Maktoum and the organisation has won Group 1 races in 12 countries for 20 different trainers and 59 jockeys.

Notable winners during the 25 years include Lammtara in the 1995 English Derby along with Street Cry, Dubai Millennium and this year's winner Thunder Snow, in the Dubai World Cup.

Australia played an important part in Godolphin's most successful year, 2018, when it claimed 30 Group 1 races in eight different countries starting with Hartnell in the C F Orr Stakes and including a first Melbourne Cup with Cross Counter.

This year has also started well with Godolphin represented by the first three home in the world's richest two-year-old race, the Golden Slipper, won by Kiamichi. –
