Murray suspended

The National Horseracin­g Authority (NHA) confirms that at an inquiry held in the Stipendiar­y Stewards Boardroom at the

Vaal Racecourse on 28 November jockey Callan Murray was charged with a contravent­ion of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop), in that he struck the horse Waqaas more than 12 times during Race 5 at Turffontei­n Racecourse on 7 November.

He pleaded guilty and was found guilty of the charge.

The Inquiry Board, after viewing the patrol films of the race, considerin­g Mr Murray’s record and all other factors presented in mitigation and aggravatio­n, ruled Murray be suspended from riding in races for a period of seven days.

He has the right of appeal against the penalty imposed. – and was back in work on Saturday. Kannemeyer felt the few days off work would not affect African Warrior’s preparatio­n for the Grade 1 Cape Guineas to be run on 21 December.

Kannemeyer has an enviable record in this three-year-old classic, having won it five times, on top of the handful of successes his father, Peter, had.
