Forget Floyd, worry about SA cops’ violence
The ANC needs to sweep SA’s corner clean and forget about the US’ troubles, writes Ted O’Connor
Your editorial in Wednesday’s paper highlighted the hypocrisy of the ANC, who chose to comment on the killing of George Floyd following mistreatment by a police officer in Minnesota USA, yet ignored the brutal killing of Collin Khosa by soldiers, when he refused to answer their questions on a trivial matter.
There is also the issue of the other people dying at the hands of the police of which nothing is heard of again.
It took a court order to put those involved in Khosa’s death on suspension, yet an internal inquiry exonerated them, leaving them free to continue harassing innocent members of the community.
The ruling party needs to honour those who died by having their killers held responsible and jailed, and not concern themselves with incidents taking place elsewhere.
The death of Floyd has created mayhem and the destruction of property and given criminals to opportunity to loot. If violence continues, there is little doubt the National Guard will be deployed, who, like our military, are not guided by the concept of applying minimum force.
As a matter of interest, in 2017 an innocent white female, Justine Ruszczyk was killed unlawfully by a black policeman in Minnesota, but presumably the radicals felt her death was unworthy of protest, and justice was allowed to take its course resulting in a heavy jail term for the officer.
