Hunt uses the break to reflect

HAD SOME TIME TO ADDRESS SCORING DROUGHT

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

If anyone enjoyed the hiatus from domestic football during the international window for the past weekand-a-half, it was probably Kaizer Chiefs’ Gavin Hunt. The little break gave Hunt some time to work quietly at trying to resolve the mystery of his side’s inability to score goals, after they had gone five games without sending the ball into the net (the only goal they got in that period was an own-goal from Chippa United).

This has been a big setback for Amakhosi. who have neither scored nor won in their last three games.

Their torrid start to the new campaign has sent a negative message to the club’s supporters, leaving them thinking their beloved club might just end a fifth consecutive season without anything in the trophy cabinet.

Hunt, who was hired amid much fanfare as he was seen as the Biblical Moses who would lead the team back to glory days, has been hugely hampered by the club’s transfer ban.

That meant he couldn’t bring in any new players to bolster the squad.

But, while things have only gone awry for him, Hunt has remained positive, especially regarding the scoring situation, which he feels can be turned around.

“If you look at even (Orlando) Pirates, how they were struggling to score and all of a sudden they got the goals against us, these things can turn very, very quickly,” said Hunt after the last game, a defeat by Pirates in the MTN8 semifinals just before the Fifa break.

There was not much Hunt could have worked on to improve scoring during the break, with some of his attackers away on national duty – Khama Billiat was with Zimbabwe while Lebogang Manyama was with Bafana Bafana.

“The most important thing is... we’re creating opportunities... but we certainly need to be taking them, there’s no two ways about that. In the last couple of games that we’ve played, there were some great opportunities and we’ve got to be doing better in front of goal,” added Hunt.

It is worth mentioning, however, that Amakhosi have been without their top goalscorer from last season, Samir Nurkovic, who has been nursing an injury.

Chiefs are back in action this weekend with an away match against Golden Arrows, who have been in decent form, at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium tomorrow afternoon ( kick-off 3.30pm).
