Choosing the right school

- Citizen reporter

Moving from preschool to big school, or from primary school to high school, is a big deal for kids, and a huge responsibility for parents who have to choose a school.

Unfortunately, choosing a school for your child is not easy. There are some important factors you need to consider.

► Just because it’s the best school, doesn’t mean it’s a good fit

Choosing a school is to not just choosing it because it’s the top school. Look at why it’s ranked as the top school: is it because of their academic success or their sports programme?

If your child is more sporty than academic, a school that is ranked as a top school for academics might not be a great fit for him.

You also need to consider the subject choices of your child.

► Is there a bullying policy?

If they say there’s no bullying at their school – be wary and find another school. If they have a bullying policy, ask what it is.

► What is the staff turnover at the school?

Have the teachers and principal been at the school for long, or do they have a big staff turnover?

You don’t want your child to start getting used to a teacher, only for them to be replaced a couple of months later.

► Check out the bathrooms

The state of student bathrooms is often an indicator of how much the school cares about the kids.

► Talk to other parents

Teachers and school staff will always put their best foot forward on open days, so it’s a good idea to chat to some other parents to get their opinion about the school.

► Does your child like the school?

Your child is the one who’ll be attending the school and spending most of his/ her time there, so it’s really important for them to like the school.
