Striker boost for Chiefs

Serbian striker will give a completely new dimension to the mis-firing Kaizer Chiefs attack.

Gavin Hunt’s headache at Kaizer Chiefs may soon be cured, with striker Samir Nurkovic starting training with the rest of the squad this week.

The Amakhosi mentor has had a terrible start to his career at Naturena with his team battling to find the back of the net.

In 10 games – five in the DStv Premiership, three in the MTN8 and two in the Caf Champions League – that Chiefs have played so far under Hunt, they have scored just five times.

While it may appear like just an excuse by Hunt to rue Nurkovic’s abscence, it is valid considering how the team create chances but fail to convert any.

Just look at their Champions League game at the weekend against PWD Bamenda of Cameroon as an example, where they could have easily emerged with a 5- 0 win, but couldn’t even score one.

Nurkovic’s return will surely give the team a new dimention in attack with both Khama Billiat and Leonardo Castro having failed to lead the line to good effect.

To his credit, Castro has scored twice this season; in a league game against Golden Arrows where Hunt said he could have got more.

Amakhosi announced yesterday morning that the Serbian striker, who had been rumoured to be on Pitso Mosimane’s wish list at Al- Ahly, has resumed full training.

“Samir Nurkovic returns to training this week. His progress will be monitored and further updates will follow,” read a statement posted on the club’s official Twitter account.

Nurkovic suffered a groin injury while in the bio-bubble and he has been missing from the Chiefs team since the season started. While his return is hugely anticipated, the wait could be a little longer as he will need time to get back to full match fitness and would probably only be available towards the end of the month.

Amakhosi also posted an update on defender Reeve Frosler’s injury, saying he would have the brace removed this week as he recovers from a knee injury.

“Reeve Frosler is recovering well from his knee injury and he will remove the brace this week. He is expected back in January.”

Chiefs’ DStv Premiership clash with Black Leopards, originally scheduled for this evening, has been moved to tomorrow evening after the delay in their weekend CAF Champions League fi xture.
