Suspects killed after cash heist
A robbery suspect was arrested while four others were killed during a shoot-out with police in Katlehong in the East Rand following a cashin-transit heist in Edison Street, Langlaagte, yesterday morning.
Explosives were used to bomb an armoured vehicle. One suspect fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, leaving the vehicle they used to ram the armoured vehicle off the road to burn.
One of the security guards was taken to hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the head.
Deputy provincial commissioner for policing in Gauteng Major-General Daniel Mthombeni said a 72-hour plan had been implemented to locate the suspects.
Mthombeni said there was assistance by National Crime Intelligence, the South African Police Service Airwing and Limpopo and Mpumalanga tracking teams, with further help from the Ekhuruleni and Joburg metro police departments in the form of pillar two, which was the proactive stage.
He said police officers and a chopper followed the suspects.
“During investigations in Katlehong, authorities found the armed men at a garage in a house and a shoot-out ensued. This led to four fatalities and one suspect was injured and arrested,” said Mthombeni.
Police recovered three rifles and three cars, two of which were from reported hijackings.
“We also have to indicate that one of the cars, an E-class Mercedes-Benz, was reported stolen in Sandton earlier this month. Another car, an Audi Q5, was hijacked in Tsakane,” said Mthombeni.
