Lakay: Downs keen to grab everything on offer
Mamelodi Sundowns are aiming to lift every trophy on offer this season, mobile defender Lyle Lakay (below) has claimed.
The Chloorkop-based side has already lost out on the MTN8 this term, but are top of the DStv Premiership and also have a chance of winning the Nedbank Cup and the Caf Champions League.
Sundowns were set to leave for Algeria yesterday to face CR Belouzidad in a Champions League Group B clash on Tuesday, only to find out at the last minute that the Confederation of African Football have cancelled the match because of Covid-19 restrictions in Algeria.
Masandawana are the second South African team to be affected by travel restrictions, after Kaizer Chiefs’ trip to face Wydad Casablanca in the Champions League had to be cancelled last week.
“We want to win every game. We want to win everything that’s at stake,” said Lakay after Sundowns had beaten
Baroka FC 2-0 in a league clash on Wednesday.
Lakay also admitted that Bakgaga gave them a tough time but he was glad that in the end they showed their skill and versatility to overcome the challenges that the Limpopo side brought.
Sundowns eventually won through second half strikes from Gaston Sirino and Peter Shalulile.
“Baroka are always a tough game for us, if you look at the past fixtures, even at home. We won the first round fixture away and we knew what to expect from them coming here.
“They are a team who like to play on the transition, with their wingers shifting. We made sure our defence was well organised and that we used the chances we created but most importantly, we kept a clean sheet,” said the former Bloemfontein Celtic and Cape Town City star.
Sundowns’ DStv Premiership clash with Maritzburg United was postponed to allow them to travel to Algeria, and it remains to be seen if they will now face the Team of Choice this weekend.
