Fitzsimmons, Nunes look to strike gold at Kranji

- Luke Middlebrook

There is an even 12-race fixture at Kranji Racecourse in Singapore tomorrow with just a Class 4 1600m Handicap on the Polytrack as the highest-rated race on the card. However, there are some interesting races across the day.

In the final race, the Class 4 1100m Handicap on the Polytrack, leading trainer Tim Fitzsimmons and leading jockey Manoel Nunes team up with recent stable acquisition Gold Ten Sixty-One.

Gold Ten Sixty-One was an impressive debut winner in August last year when previously known as Dinar. Subsequently, the threeyear-old finished a luckless sixth in a Novice race two starts.

Gold Ten Sixty-One then spelled for more four months before resuming with an encouraging firstup effort 42 days ago for trainer Jason Lim, beaten a head in the final stride over 1200m at this track.

Gold Ten Sixty-One has been transferred to the in-form Fitzsimmons stable since, and trialling very well ahead of this week’s race, he can prove hard to run down in a field without much depth.

Another stable transfer who can win for Fitzsimmons is Buuraq in the Class 5 1200m Handicap (Race 7). Buuraq was last seen turning in a better run than it reads into fifth over an unsuitable 1000m on the Polytrack 42 days ago, in which he raced wide at the rear of the field but came home strongly.

Fitzsimmons looks to him to keep flying and he will be hard to beat on his Class 5 debut.

Meanwhile, Fitzsimmons continues his good form and leads the premiership with a five-win buffer over Jason Ong 25-20.

Manoel Nunes looks virtually unstoppable in the jockeys’ premiership, with it seemingly only a question of “how far”? Nunes sits atop the ladder with 44 wins, 25 ahead of Oscar Chavez on 19 wins.
