Lions won’t underestimate Dragons

- Ross Roche

The Lions will not underestimate the Dragons in their final game of this seasons United Rugby Championship (URC) at Rodney Parade in Newport, Wales on Saturday afternoon.

It has been a dreadful season for the Dragons who sit second from bottom on the URC log having picked up just two wins and one draw from their 17 matches so far, while the Lions have fared a lot better with seven wins.

Despite the Dragons struggles, Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen (right) believes that they have been improving in recent games and will be a tough test for the Lions.

“The Dragons have been very competitive in their local derbies. I think they have changed their style of play a little bit, and look to be a bit more attacking minded,” explained Van Rooyen.

“We know they are a big physical team, hard at rucks and good in the air. So we won’t get caught at where they are on the log.”

The Lions will be hoping for some decent conditions to allow them to play their exciting brand of attacking rugby, but may be forced to be a bit conservative if conditions are wet.

With this their final match of their inaugural URC campaign the Lions will be looking to get as much as they can out of it to take into the off season.

“We are expecting a bit of rain and wind, so I think it’s an opportunity for us to go there and if conditions are good enough to have a crack we will,” said Van Rooyen.

“It is important for us to keep on growing our game management but also to play an attacking brand where we play with tempo and physicality, so it’s important for us to keep doing that.”
