EPL goes down to the line

It’s the last big weekend of the 202122 soccer season and seven TAB pools will be boosted by carryovers including two Soccer 10 pools that are both expected to total some R4 million and could produce mega payouts.

After an exciting and drama-filled campaign, marked more by relentless proficiency than twists and turns, the English Premiership goes down to the wire on the last day of the season on Sunday with Manchester City and Liverpool neck and neck.

And to celebrate the last big weekend of the 2021-22 soccer season, TAB is adding carryovers totalling R1.5 million to seven soccer pools.

All the carryover details are on Page 11 and TAB soccer customers who win one of the likely R4million Soccer 10 pools will have much to celebrate come Monday morning.

Both City and Liverpool are playing at home on the last day. City enjoy a one-point advantage at the top of the table and whether they win the Premier League crown for the second season running is entirely in their hands.

They face Aston Villa, while Liverpool host Wolves after beating Southampton 2-1 away on Tuesday to move to 89 points, one behind City’s 90. Both are extraordinary point totals, evidence of the machines that these two teams are.

City are overwhelming favourites to beat Villa and Liverpool fans can only hope that Pep Guardiola’s team succumbs to one of those calamitous incidents that seem to befall them every now and then.

Like their last-gasp loss in the Champions League semi-final to Real Madrid when one minute of madness destroyed them.

Liverpool have done well to reduce City’s sizeable lead and set up an exciting last-day scenario with hopes of the fabled quadruple still alive. Two cups already, an outside chance at the league and then next weekend’s Champions League final against Real Madrid in Paris make for a dream season.

Chelsea host already relegated Watford and are set for third spot, while Tottenham take a two-point advantage over Arsenal into their last game and look on course to finish fourth - and take the last Champions League berth available to English clubs.

Spurs are at bottom-placed Norwich, not necessarily the easiest place to go, and the Gunners must hope for a massive upset and beat Everton at the same time if they are to play in Champions League next season.

Tomorrow marks the end of the DStv Premiership season, barring three matches still to be played by Orlando Pirates who take on Renaissance Berkane in Nigeria tonight in the final of the African Confederation Cup.

The Buccaneers can expect robust opposition from a strong Moroccan side and it will be among the toughest games they will have played, but they should have the support of the locals which will help.
