Gabon captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has announced his retirement from international football, handing his country a major blow just weeks before qualifying starts for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals. Aubameyang, 32, did not appear for his county when they reached the last 16 of the Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon in January after testing positive for COVID-19 and being sent back to Europe for tests on possible heart lesions caused by the virus, although this did not turn out to be serious
