Condolences for Wentzel

- Narissa Subramoney

Messages of condolences for wellknown petrolhead Chad Wentzel are pouring in on social media.

Details about Wentzel’s death remain unclear, but it’s alleged the Johannesburg-based businessman was attacked by a staff member on Monday in his workshop in Longmeadow Business Estate in Modderfontein.

Wentzel was the owner of motoring business Sportech Cars.

Former racing partner Grant McCleery told The Citizen Wentzel was hit with a hammer by a staff member, who was apparently seen trying to dispose of the body.

“His personal assistant had gone to the shop in the evening when she saw the employee trying to wrap the body,” said McCleery. “When she saw that, she panicked and ran out, and so did the attacker. Police haven’t caught him yet.”

McCleery described Wentzel’s death as a huge loss to the local motoring community.

The motoring community is reeling, with one tribute, from Jacques Steyn, reading “A very sad day… RIP bud. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends. A big loss to family, motorsport and the Bedfordview CPF [community police forum].”

According to a report by Bedfordview and Edenvale News, the Sebenza SA Police Service has opened a case of murder.
