Schools are arenas of violence

- John

Matome Chiloane, pictured, MEC for education in Gauteng is “concerned about ill-discipline displayed by pupils”. He states: “Any form of ill-discipline and unruly behaviour will be met by disciplinary action.” All huff and puff after a deadly incident – and that’s where it ends.

Student organisations, counsellors, education officials, sex therapists, psychologists, hairdressers and “education experts” have all “expressed concerns” about the violence, but have not come up with any answers, 28 years on. Schools are becoming arenas of violence. Schools are no longer institutions where pupils can learn, enjoy themselves and feel protected.

One pupil even admitted: “The pupils are getting out of hand.” Wow, an Einstein moment!

An extremely violent society such as South Africa begets violence. Children follow the example of their parents and other adults. Parents protesting at schools, forcibly and physically removing teachers and principals, locking gates and burning down schools promotes this violence. Some political parties even encourage pupils to revolt against the system.

Pupils have the upper hand and know they are protected by the plethora of ridiculous children’s rights which even prohibit parents from disciplining their children. The Governing Body Foundation has called for a new disciplinary approach, but gives no examples.

The uncontrollable violence restricts effective learning and teaching. Too much time is spent on solving problems.

The plan to create a peaceful, learning environment is but a myth and will never happen in South Africa. Violence is ingrained. Violence is definitely the tool of the ignorant and doesn’t solve any problems.
