Ajax stun Santos in derby thriller
AJAX Cape Town came up trumps at the Athlone Stadium last night as they beat Santos 4-3 in a sensational local derby.
Ajax were at one stage 3-1 up, before the Peoples’ Team fought back to level the match, only for Thulani Serero to grab a late winner.
Terror Fanteni got proceedings under way in the 18th minute – the Bafana striker netted with an excellent chip from out wide.
The Parow-based team were reduced to 10 men with 35 minutes gone as Thulani Hlatshwayo showed far too much derby passion when he nailed Tony Tsabedze.
Ajax though stuck to their guns and it was 2-0 in the 41st minute as Khama Billiat strode into the box, cut inside and then curled the ball past Tshepo Motsonoeng and into the far corner.
Bongi Macala got Santos back in the game when he flew in at the back post to convert a header in the 43rd minute.
More was to come before halftime as Clayton Daniels stroked home Sameehg Doutie’s cross in the 45th minute.
Boebie Solomons’ men were more up for it after the break and had a couple of promising moments in attack. After a string of set pieces in the 64th minute, Vuyisile Wana struck with a stunning 20m effort to curl the ball past Vonk; 3-2.
10 minutes later it was all square as Jurie Basie surged into the box and then beat Vonk, despite the keeper getting a touch on the ball.
Serero it was who seized the moment, hitting a world-class effort into the top corner from 25m out, with just three minutes to go.
