- BECKER SEMELA

THE Free State department of public works has spent more than R11 million on fixing three bridges damaged during floods last year.

Department spokesman Saki Mohono said the bridge between Ficksburg and Clocolan was opened again on Monday after having been closed for almost a year.

“The R11 million was spent on repairs to three bridges, namely the Ficksburg/ Clocolan bridge, a bridge in Bluegumbosch in Qwaqwa and another on the R700 between Bultfontein and Welkom while R 3,7 millon was spent on the Ficksburg bridge.

“About R3,9 million was budgeted for the Bluegumbosch bridge, which is expected to be finished not later than November this year. He said the bridge on the R700 is still under heavy construction,” Mohono said.

Mohono also said that there were 1 341 bridges around Free State which urgently need maintenance work or to be rebuilt.

He said this is expected to cost about R500 million. THE AFTERMATH. Likeleli Molotsane lost everything in the tornado that devastated a section of Meqheleng township just outside Ficksburg in the eastern Free State at the weekend.
