The Citizen (KZN)

We need more people to talk truth to leaders

-

Leaders need to take heed of these protests, writes Mohamed Saeed from Pietermaritzburg.

Why are citizens always protesting in the streets? Politicians should not tell me its democracy in action. Yes, to a certain point, but leaders need to do some self-reflection.

This is not a tongue-in-cheek question and by no means am I trying to degrade the efforts of thousands walking on the streets with posters.

For various causes I have also walked the streets and I have the utmost admiration for individuals who walk the talk by participating in non-violent protests to raise awareness for a cause, like the recent anti-corruption march.

Leaders need to take heed of these protests. These protest marches are in retaliation to the lack of service delivery and the expectations of the masses. There is a strong link between corruption and the service delivery protests.

We need more people to talk the truth to those in power in order to bring about a life of dignity for all and to hold our leaders accountable.

While the ANC-led government needs to be commended for making some progress towards a better life for all, there is a lot more that needs to be done on service delivery and other areas, such as empowerment, skills development, entrepreneurship, poverty eradication and job creation.

There has to be a political will to end corruption and improve important services, such as health, education, security and rule of law. Let’s work together to improve the lives of all.
