The ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) is forging ahead with its push for a woman president – even if it means electing a sex worker – to succeed President Jacob Zuma as ANC president and head of state.

The league plans to raise the matter vigorously with ANC members at the party’s national general council (NGC), which kicks off tomorrow in Midrand, Gauteng.

ANCWL president and Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini said the league want a 50/50 gender representation in almost all ANC structures.

“We want to see the integration of women in the national development plan,” said Dlamini.

She dropped a bombshell when she said the ANC does not have a problem electing a sex worker as its leader. “The ANC has never ever had a problem with electing someone who is a sex worker.

“When you join they don’t ask you whether you are a sex worker and therefore you can’t be in the structures of the ANC.

“That would be discrimination,” Dlamini said.

“We also want women to be premiers and provincial chairpersons. We want women to be given more responsibility.”

African Union commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is being punted as a candidate to take over from Zuma as ANC president in 2017 and ultimately head of state in 2019. Dlamini said the time had come for ANC structures to discuss the party’s leadership race, adding that the discussions should include women.

Asked if the league supports the call for Zuma to stand for a third term as ANC president, Dlamini replied: “The ANC Youth League has not lobbied us.”

The ANCYL is in favour of Zuma serving a third term.

Dlamini said there was nothing wrong with the so-called “Premier League” in the ANC.

The “Premier League” is an ANC lobby group led by Free State Premier Ace Magashule, North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo and Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza.

Meanwhile, there is talk that a motion of no confidence may be passed in some ANC leaders at the NGC. –
