Pandemonium as Bucs return

- Jonty Mark

It was pandemonium at OR Tambo International airport yesterday as Orlando Pirates received a heroes’ welcome on their return home from beating Al-Ahly and qualifying for the final of the 2015 Caf Confederation Cup.

Thousands of Buccaneers fans turned out, lining all four levels of the main arrivals section to show their support for their side’s achievement in making it to a second continental final in three years.

“The reception we have received today is fantastic and we want to thank the South African fans for the support they have shown us throughout the tournament,” said Pirates coach Eric Tinkler.

“We are extremely proud of our achievement getting the win, it has been a long trip home but a good trip. To get this kind of welcome is the icing on the cake.”

Pirates trailed 2- 0 at the Suez Stadium in Egypt on Sunday, and at that stage were on their way out of the competition, having only won the first leg 1- 0 in Orlando.

But Kermit Erasmus ( below) came off the bench to grab a precious away goal, and Pirates went on to win an amazing match 4-3, setting up a final against Tunisian side Etoile Du Sahel.

Erasmus expressed his delight at reaching this final with Pirates, especially as he was cup tied when the Buccaneers made it all the way to the deciding match in the 2013 Caf Champions League.

““It is a great honour to be part of a team known for making history and hopefully we can cap it by lifting the cup,” said Erasmus.

Pirates will play the fi rst leg of the final against Etoile at home on November 21, with the away leg to be played a week later.
