Action-packed weekend
VARIETY: ROCK RACEWAY BRINGS CLUB OVAL CHAMPIOSNHIPS AND DRAG RACING Brakpan comes alive with heavy competition on the tracks.
The Rock Raceway in Brakpan will offer fans a wide variety of motorsport this weekend. On Saturday, the venue’s 400m oval will host the final round of this year’s Club Oval Championships, with 11 separate racing disciplines in action.
Topping the show will be races for Outlaw V8 Sprint Cars, with about a dozen of the mighty, massively winged and tyred, 450Kw vehicles facing the starter.
Only slightly slower should be races for V8 Lexus Sprint Cars, rotary-powered Super Midgets, 125cc Gearbox Karts and Super Saloon Cars.
Rounding out the programme will be events for Formula 2 Midgets, 1600 Stock Rods, 1660 Modified Saloons, Two-Litre Pinto Saloons, 100cc Karts, Ninja Midgets for kids between the ages of six and 12 years, and Formula N cars.
The gates will be open from noon, with practice sessions during the day. Racing proper will start at 4pm. Admision will cost R65 per adult and R30 per child.
The Rock’s 220m drag strip will see a round of this year’s Street 2 Strip Drag series on Sunday evening.
Basically, they invite any owners of fast street legal cars to come and play on their drag strip.
The racing is not strictly regulated – you basically take your car, park in the pits and challenge other people to take you on over the strip.
The organizers simply start every run by dropping a flag, and there are no electronic beams or timing – it is heads-up competition, with the first car over the finish line the winner.
Competitors must bring their own crisis caps, abstain from drinking and preferably wear long-sleeved clothing during runs.
This is drag racing in its purest grass-roots form.
The gates will be open from 2pm, with racing to start at 4pm. Admission costs R30 per adult and R20 per student.
On both nights, the venue will sell food and drinks, or you may bring your own. Parking is free, plentiful and patrolled.
