Red Star festival offers cream of the crop

The Red Star Raceway, near Delmas, will kick off its 2016 activities on a high note today with a Mini Extreme Festival, boasting three motorcycle and two car categories with top drivers in action.

Topping the day’s events will be two races for 111 Sports and Saloon Cars, with 24 contenders taking to the tarmac.

Front runners should include Craig Botha (Golf), Adrian Dalton (Golf), Louis Scholtz (Honda Ballade) veteran George Bezuidenho­ut (Forkman Nissan Primera), Vaughn Obhlidal (Tisson BMW M3), Deon Crous (VW Golf), Jeff Langeveldt (Honda CRX), Ishma- el Baloyi (TAR Honda Civic) and Ryan Quan-Chai Rex Diff BMW 24M).

The Northern Bolt & Tool Superhatch events will see drivers such as Hilton van Nieuwenhui­zen (Citroen C2), Morne Human (Mini Cooper S) and Andre de Lange (Ford Laser), Brett Garland (Autobarn Honda Civic), Jeff rey Kruger (VW Polo), Mel Spurr (G&H AKA Opel Corsa) and Nic Martin (RDG Olel Kadett) in action.

Graeme van Breda (IVID ZX10R) will head up the Red Square Kawasaki Masters entry list, with his closest challenger­s riders such as (Kyle Robinson (Fantech ZX10R), Tony Klem (Frontier Diamonds ZX10R), Raymond Keel (BTS ZX10R), Ian Harwood (TRP ZX10R) and Sanjiv Singh (Kawasaki ZX10R).

The Dunlop Thunderbik­e category should see top riders such as Stephen Steenkamp (PTA North Toyota Honda), Gareth Davidson (Linex Yamaha), Garrick Vlok (BMW) and Gavin Upton (TurnSkill Kawasaki) fight for podium places.

There will also be races for the Silverton Challenge and Sub 10 Superbike groups, with some 30 entries facing the starter.

The Red Star gates will be open from 7am, with qualifying sessions in the early morning. Racing will start at 11am. Admission is R100 per adult and R60 per student, with kids under the age of 12 entering free.
