ANCYL blasted as ‘inhumane’

The fallout between the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) and its mother body in Gauteng took another turn yesterday.

Luthuli House is calling on the league’s national leadership and ANC Gauteng provincial leaders to reprimand the Gauteng ANCYL for “inhumane behaviour”.

This was after the ANCYL in the province said Gauteng premier and ANC provincial chairperson David Makhura should resign following this week’s release of the damning report by health ombudsman Professor Malegapuru Makgoba on the deaths of 94 psychiatric patients.

It also called on the ANC to take disciplinary measures against Makhura and former health MEC Qedani Mahlangu, who has quit over the saga.

ANC national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said yesterday: “No person should ever grandstand on anyone’s pain. It is for this reason the ANC finds the statements of the ANCYL in Gauteng to be atrocious, despicable and unbefitting, not only members of the ANC but humanity at large.”

“During this difficult period, all structures of our movement should be focusing their energies on supporting the bereaved families; it is not the time for squabbling around leadership positions and unfortunate public displays of disunity.”

Kodwa called on the youth league to raise its issues within acceptable organisational and societal norms.

ANCYL Gauteng provincial chairperson Matome Chiloane said the league was holding its provincial executive committee meeting and would decide on the way forward in that forum. –
