Derby captains promise goals

- Michaelson Gumede

Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United’s captains have both promised goals ahead of tomorrow’s Tshwane derby at Loftus Versfeld.

This will be the first of two Absa Premiership meetings between the sides in a short space of time, with the cross-town rivals clashing again six days later at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

“We have been under pressure and we haven’t been scoring. I spoke to Khama Billiat and told him that he needs to score two goals,” said Downs captain Hlompho Kekana (above) yesterday.

An immediate response from his counterpart Dean Furman was: “I think if they score two we will score three, that is the message from us.”

The two sides, both still in the hunt for the title, are separated by just two points on the Premiership table, with Stuart Baxter’s men having played two games more than Pitso Mosimane side.

Masandawana have been suffering a dip in form of late, and have not won any of their last six domestic matches, while Matsatsantsa suffered a shock 1-0 defeat by rock bottom Baroka FC in their last league encounter.

Furman is adamant that his side are feeling as much pressure as Downs.

‘We are coming back from a defeat at home to Baroka and we want to put that right, and the only way to put that right is by getting three points and moving … back into the mix,” he said.

Kekana admitted his side had lost a bit of certainty in front of goal in recent games. Sundowns have scored just once in their last five league matches.

“Going forward I think we are going to see goals from Sundowns,” he boldly declared.
