Durban July fashion tips

DURBAN JULY: DRESS TO BE AN EYE-MAGNET, BUT MAKE SURE IT’S NOT IN THE WRONG WAY The dos and don’ts of planning an outfit for this grand event.

- Kgosi Modisane

It’s that time of the year again when fashion lovers and the glitterati congregate at the Greyville Racecourse in Durban for the Vodacom Durban July. The Durban July is among the most highlighted spectacle of the year and everyone comes out to play.

But for some finding an outfit suitable for the occasion is always pivotal to fully enjoying this grand affair.

Here is a checklist to use when deciding on an outfit: The Dos:

First relax, it’s not rocket science, stop overthinking it. You know what works for your body so why stretch yourself too far in the name of fashion.

It would be wise to align yourself to the marquee invitation in your possession.

As at any party, you don’t want to be the one sticking out from the crowd.

There is a difference between standing out and sticking out; one mostly has to do with how perfectly you are integrated while the latter is a matter for concern.

Having abided by steps one and two, the third should be easy – de- on a budget.

I always try and save on accommodation by relying on friends for a spot to sleep. Why not? He’s already paid for his room and I need to look good. Think of it this way: you need a main outfit and some for the pre- and afterparties.

Clear out your closet. Find cool ways of wearing an old piece of clothing and use Apps like Pinterest and Instagram to see what will work best.

Gents, there are more than two ways of wearing a tux so try them out. I always think it’s darciding ing when I spot a guy wearing a blood-red tux paired with navy blue shoes. Or why not try something new?

Rompers are trending across the globe so why not pair one with a crisp white shirt and bow tie.

Ladies, the first step is to invest in heel-stoppers to protect your shoes and the grass, which the horses abuse enough.

Second, understand that it’s a horseracing event, not a gala dinner, so there is no need to pull out the ball gown.

Instead opt for a dress or suit with flair and fluidity.

And have fun, why else are you there?

The best thing about the July is everyone – yes, everyone, even celebrities – come out to the race simply to have fun.

But pace yourself at the open bar – nothing kills a stunning outfit like a tacky, drunk owner. Keep your decorum.

Remember there are cameras flashing around and you don’t want the July weekend to follow you all the way to your desk back in Joburg.

The Don'ts

Arrive late at the racecourse. You will have missed all the action and will most likely be playing catch-up half the time while everyone is being festive.

Decide on an outfit the day of the race – the key is to seem effortlessly polished.

Take chances by getting yourself into a marquee that you are not invited to.

Unless you know someone who knows someone, stay on the other side of red rope.

Leave the hotel without a power bank charger. How else are you going to “bring it” if people don’t know you are there?

Ladies, avoid using too much make-up. Durban is humid so avoid liquid foundation, powder is your friend.

For some, finding an outfit suitable for the occasion is always pivotal to fully enjoying this grand affair.
