Wome boosts Bucs

STRIKER HAS INSIDE KNOWLEDGE OF UNITED

-

If Orlando Pirates are looking for an insider to help them out in their bid to gain revenge over SuperSport United in tomorrow’s Nedbank Cup final, they could do worse than turn to Dove Wome.

The Togolese striker was part of Stuart Baxter’s SuperSport squad that beat Orlando Pirates 3-2 in last year’s final, but moved to the Buccaneers last July, unable to nail down a regular place in the Matsatsantsa first team.

“I was in the other dressing-room and I know how we (Pirates) prepare and how they (SuperSport) prepare for the final,” said Wome this week.

“Last time we knew Pirates would have a lot of the ball and we just needed to show our fighting spirit. That is what we (SuperSport) did and we won the cup. They (SuperSport) really want to do that again and we have spoken about this. We will be up to the challenge and have that spirit on the field.”

Wome has come to the fore at Pirates this year under the guidance of Kjell Jonevret, netting three of his four league goals for the club since the Swede took over in late February.

Most South African football followers will know that Wome played for SuperSport, meanwhile, but some may not know that SuperSport’s veteran defender Morgan Gould spent some time with Orlando Pirates’ juniors. Gould has gone on to have an extremely successful club career at SuperSport and Kaizer Chiefs, but was actually booted out of the Pirates academy as a youngster.

“I was there for two years or so, there was a guy called Eric who ran the Pirates juniors and it was so successful,” explained Gould this week.

“Then they (Pirates) came and took over and moved the academy to Mayfair and we were all chucked out. I am actually happy it happened because in life your setbacks start at a young age, and it is about how you deal with it.”

Tomorrow, Gould has a chance to win his first trophy since returning to SuperSport this season from Kaizer Chiefs.
