A20-year-old knifewielding man went on a crime spree on Wednesday, leaving one person dead and two others injured, including a police officer.

The suspect’s bloody rampage started in Furst Avenue, in Eersterust, where he hijacked retired high school teacher Lana Burger’s car.

Police spokesperson Sam Shibambo said it is alleged the man pulled Burger out of her white Jetta Fox forcefully and stabbed her on the lower body while she was lying on the ground.

The suspect then drove off in Burger’s car to John Sydney Drive, where he entered the house of pensioner Allan Davies, 66, and stabbed him several times in the upper body.

“The pensioner was declared dead at the scene,” Shibambo said.

According to information, Davies was busy with paperwork at a coffee table in his TV room when the suspect surprised him.

Shibambo said after the second attack, the man ran to Karel Abel Avenue and on his way he noticed that the police were in pursuit. He ran into an open house.

Monique Sutton said the suspect just stormed into her house and tried to stab her 51-year-old mother, Eugene, but she threw a flower vase at him.

“My brother, Cohen, distracted him to get him away from my mother. The man went for my brother and he fought him off by throwing chairs at him. The suspect then ran into my mother’s bedroom and locked himself in.

“At that time, he still had the murder weapon in his hand. We did not know my sister, Lauren, 21, was in the bedroom hiding in my mother’s closet.

“The suspect threw things around while my sister was listening to his every move,” Sutton said.

She said the police arrived at the scene and broke the bedroom door down and threw stun grenades into the bedroom.

The suspect stabbed an officer in the upper body. “Despite the serious injuries suffered by the police official, he and his crew managed to arrest the suspect. The suspect was arrested and detained and he will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon,” Shibambo said.

He has been charged with murder, hijacking, and attempted murder. –
