Laird runners to fight it out

- Jack Milner

Racing on the Greyville Polytrack has not been easy for punters lately but they could be in the money if they follow Anton Marcus and Charles Laird at Greyville tomorrow.

The pair have a number of good offerings, at times as a combination and individually on others.

There could be a problem picking the right one, though, in Race 5, a MR 90 Handicap over 1400m.

Marcus rides Dance On Air for Laird but the trainer also has Waltzed Home, the mount of Tristan Godden.

One would normally assume Marcus is on the stable-elect but Dance On Air is owned by Mayfair Speculators, who have first call on the former champion jockey.

This five-year-old son of Kahal has decent enough form over the course and distance, having run five times for two wins and two places.

He also had a decent enough effort last time over 1600m at the track, finishing 1.75 lengths behind Cutting Edge in second spot in a stronger field than this. Dance On Air is probably a little better over 1400m so one has the right to expect a massive run.

However, Waltzed Home has had two very good runs at this track.

In his penultimate start he was caught on the line by Macduff over 1200m and in his next start, this time with the blinkers removed, was a 0.55-length third behind talented Doosra over this 1400m.

Godden rode him in both of those races and Laird would have been loath to take him off.

He is the better drawn of the pair so on that basis the sevenyear-old gets a marginal heads up.
