United have it all to do away

- Michaelson Gumede

Strikers Jeremy Brockie and Bradley Grobler were left to regret missed opportunities as SuperSport United were held to a 1-1 draw by Club Africain in the first leg of their Caf Confederation Cup semifinal at the Lucas Moripe Stadium yesterday.

Grobler and Brockie both missed great chances early on before SuperSport went one down in the 21st minute, though they were a bit unlucky as referee Bernard Camille gave a handball in the penalty area against Morgan Gould, when the ball appeared to hit the defender in the chest.

Club Africain skipper Saber Khalifa made no mistake from the penalty spot, giving goalkeeper Ronwen Williams no chance.

Eric Tinkler made his first switch after the hour mark, introducing winger Thabo Mnyamane in place of Reneilwe Letsholonyane. Ten minutes later he withdrew Brockie, bringing on Dove Wome in the final 15 minutes.

It looked as though SuperSport’s players had left their scoring boots in the dressing-room as they continuously failed to convert their chances in front of goal.

Justice was finally served three minutes before time when Camille again pointed to the penalty spot after Opoku Nicholas handled the ball.

Substitute Mnyamane stepped up and levelled matters, slotting home after his initial spot-kick was saved, much to the delight of the Matsatsantsa faithful.
