Rush for scorers gathering pace

MOSIMANE DESPERATE TO LAND KIWI STRIKER Billiat in demand, but Castro, Nkhatha not making waves.

The grass, it is widely accepted, always looks greener on the other side – but, for sure, it’s not always the case. This, however, has not prevented a number of the PSL’s leading clubs eyeing high-profiled players from other Premier League teams in a bid to end their respective scoring droughts – even if they are not currently displaying the eye-catching form of previous seasons.

Prominent in this category are Mamelodi Sundowns’ Khama Billiat and Nelson Castro and SuperSport United’s Jeremy Brockie and Kingston Nkhatha, with considerable evidence that some, if not all, of these players will be joining other clubs at the end of the season, if not during the PSL transfer window in January.

Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has made no secret of his ongoing interest in Brockie despite the New Zealand striker battling to maintain his scoring prowess in World Cup qualifying games and recent Premier League matches.

At the same time, the one-time feared and highly effective Sundowns’ strike trio of Castro, Billiat and Keagan Dolly – ingeniously labelled “CBD” in recognition of the initial letter of their names – has all but imploded.

Dolly, of course, is already playing in France, Castro, for one reason or another, has largely been out of favour with Mosimane for some time and Billiat has shed some of his erstwhile sparkle while intimating an interest to move overseas or to another PSL club when his contract expires at the end of the season, if not sooner.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs, after four successive frustrating draws are understandably searching high and low for someone to reinforce their scoring prowess have demonstrated more than a passing interest in Colombian-born Castro.

At the same time, former Chiefs and current SuperSport striker Nkhatha, after an impressive debut with his present club two years ago, has not always been in favour this season and some news from the football grapevine is that his contract might not be renewed at the end of the current campaign.

But, if not at their present clubs, all these players, as well as a good few others who have said they are not averse to a move, have their admirers, who see them as potential match-winners after moving to their side of the fence.
