Top 947 DJ heads to Kfm

-

Darren Simpson, popularly known as Whackhead, has announced that after 14 years of being one of the top DJs at 947, he will be saying goodbye to the Joburg-based radio station this month.

Simpson, pictured, made this decision in order to focus on Capebased regional station Kfm 94.5, where he will host the breakfast show.

Simpson has already simultaneously been holding the reigns on the Kfm breakfast show, as well as the afternoon drive on 947 daily since July and is looking forward to the move to the sister station.

Dubbed the “King of Pranks”, Simpson will focus all his energies on Kfm, while growing his fan base.

“I'm so proud of what I have achieved at 947 – I have been able to practice my profession at the highest level in South Africa with the Breakfast Xpress.”

Simpson joined 947 in 2003, and became popular for his pranks and honest comments on live radio.

He released a series of annual CDs that sold more than 500 000 copies, with proceeds going to the 947 Hear for Life Trust.

In 2010, he took over the breakfast show which was rebranded as the Breakfast Xpress and became a radio favourite with his approachable, authentic humour and good heart.

In addition to his radio show, he hosted Whackhead’s Comedy Club, a Friday night comedy stand-up session at Carnival City, east of Joburg.

Simpson made a number of life-changing interventions through the station, including a drive to raise money to send a critically ill child, known as Baby Caylum, to Boston for medical treatment. – Citizen reporter
