DOWNS AT LAST
Every Tuesday in PHAKAAATHI
Pitso Mosimane’s assurance that a better Mamelodi Sundowns side is on the horizon gained some impetus yesterday as the club finally signed longtime target Jeremy Brockie from SuperSport United.
“We will be a different and a much stronger team than this. The team we have now is strong enough to win the league even though we are not consistent. But who is consistent? Show me a team that is consistent,” said Mosimane on the back of his side’s 3-1 loss to Orlando Pirates at Loftus Versfeld.
“We are six points behind where we should be but we will get there. We have a lot of injuries. In four weeks’ time we will have a better team with Bangaly Soumahoro and Aubrey Ngoma back and with the other two acquisitions that are guaranteed. We will be stronger, we are just being held back by injuries,” he said.
One of these other acquisitions is clearly Brockie with SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews saying yesterday that they let the 30-year-old go to Sundowns because of the “significant contribution” he had made at Matsatsantsa.
“It’s never easy to lose a key player like Jeremy, especially off the back of three great seasons with us in which we reached five cup finals and he became the second highest scorer at the club,” said Matthews.
“We also understand that at his age this is Jeremy’s last big move and an opportunity to secure his financial future. Given that he has made a significant contribution to the club on and off the field our board have agreed to sanction his move to Mamelodi Sundowns and we wish him well for the future.”
Meanwhile, Micho Sredojevic hesitantly threw Orlando Pirates’ name in the hat as contenders for the Absa Premiership title, but in- sisted Sundowns remain the firm favourites to become champions in May.
“You must go into every match with the intention of winning in order to be in contention for any trophy,” Sredojevic said.
“I will not run away from it but the favourites are still Sundowns. We want to develop and improve the way matches are going to be. I see room for improvement. I see developments and the critical elements that need to be improved otherwise football will punish us next time.”
