Steve wants side to win in style

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela wants his team to not only win games but to also play attractive football that will make the supporters enjoy every moment of the display.

The 50-year-old said this at the back of a win they had to fight for against National First Division side Stellenbosch FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.

As ugly as the win might have been, it was a huge one for the embattled coach following a damaging defeat to old rivals Orlando Pirates just over a week ago.

Chiefs lacked fluency but goals from Leonardo Castro and Erick Mathoho sealed a 2-1 win and ensured they advanced to the next round and their chances of ending a two-year trophy drought remain a real possibility.

“Foootball is a funny business. Last week (against Pirates) we performed well, and the result did not come. And you’ll say ‘do I want goals and not get (a good) performance’ – the fans will kill you for that,” he said in his post-match interview.

“They want you to win, and win in style, but if you can play in style and not win, it doesn’t satisfy them because they are people wanting success, so it is important to get a win. But it has to be a sweet win and not a dry one,” added Komphela.

Komphela said winning is the only result acceptable at Amakhosi and was happy to have progressed to the next round of the Ke Yona.

“We are not going to think too much about it. We just appreciate that we have gone through this match and it is part of our responsibility to go to the semifinal, final and if possible, win it. But I’m not going put myself under any mental pressure.

“If you know what’s going to happen tomorrow, then why put yourself under so much pressure? And if you don’t know why, put yourself under that pressure. You might not face the same challenge. So relax and take it one step at a time, you’ve gone through this one, let the players celebrate this one and the fans as well. Wait for the draw on Thursday and take it from there. We are at work here,” said Komphela.
