SuperSport are up for the fight

- Tshepo Ntsoelengoe

In December last year, SuperSport United were celebrated in the country for reaching the Caf Confederation Cup final, which they lost to Congolese club TP Mazembe following a memorable campaign.

Five months later, however, the Pretoria club find themselves fighting for survival in the Absa Premiership, desperate to avoid the play-offs. Matsatsantsa are 14th on the table, just two points above Ajax Cape Town, who are in the play-off spot.

Ahead of SuperSport’s season finale game against Baroka FC at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday, winger Aubrey Modiba (right) has emphasised the need for every player in the team to come together so that they can get maximum points.

“Nothing is as important as getting all three points in this game,” said the SuperSport winger. “If you look at the table, you will see that the four teams in the bottom are fighting for their lives and no one wants to play in the play-offs. Ajax are just two points from safety and they will surely be crossing their fingers that we or Polokwane City drop points because we are level on 33 points with City.”

“We will approach this game like any other game, but now the difference will have to be taking our goal-scoring chances. If you look at all our games, you will see we have not been as poor as our position in the table makes it seem.

“We always go all out and play our best football when we go on to the field. It is a pity that results have not been going our way.”

Modiba has had one of his best seasons so far, scoring eight goals in all competitions as well as having four assists to his name for the Pretoria side this season. This feat, however, has been overshadowed by the club’s poor run.
