The Citizen (KZN)

Run into full holiday mode

AN EXHIBITION OF DINOSAURS OR THEATRE, HERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Don’t let these school holidays be a drag. Spoil the kids with time out.

- Thami Kwazi city@citizen.co.za

Finally (if your kids are a little older), exams are over and it’s time for you all to take a breather. If you need some inspiration for activities to do these school holidays that won’t cost you much, look at four things they (and you) will enjoy more than expected. In conjunction with the cinema release of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, prehistoric creatures will be crawling in the aisles of Cradlestone Mall in Krugersdorp until July 15. From a massive T-Rex to digging for your own fossils, it’s a surefire way to get kids dirt-deep into palaeontology.

The following dinosaurs will be around the mall – get the kids a list so they can tick them all off.

At Edgars, see an allosaurus pachycephalosaurus; a T-Rex and triceratops will call Game home, while Ackermans is hosting a peterandon, gigantoraptor and styracosaurus.

At Total Sport there will be a stegosaurus and a small triceratops as well as a parasaurolopus (with a baby). In the walkways there will be another T-Rex, an oviraptor, velociraptor and an iguanodon. At Cotton On there will be a diplodocus and another T-Rex will be scaring up a storm at the outside parking.

Mugg & Bean quart: Live augmented reality experiences and fossil displays.

Edgars quart: Fossil sand boxes, dino games, drawing tables, small dino rides and a popup store. From June 26 kids will take over the Auto and General Theatre on the Square when musical rhino Zoemba takes to the stage.

The musical show for children was written and conceived by Connie Friedmann and will run until July 7.

The story addresses environmental issues experienced by Zoemba the rhino and his friends. Expect suspense-filled interactive stories, music, sing-a-longs, audience participation and energetic dancing in this holiday spectacular with wonderful messages for young people about rhinos, recycling, conservation and friendship.

The show stars Zoemba, Matatho Mampa, and Pieter Erasmus.

There are performances daily from Tuesday to Saturday at 3pm as well as 11am shows on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Tickets are R80 and bookings can be made by calling the theatre’s box office on 011-883-8606 or through computicket.com. Inquire about group bookings and school discounts. Emerald Resort and Casino is hosting weekly timed runs tomorrow – with 2.5km and 5km tracks for the whole family.

“As a family destination, the resort is perfectly suited to this type of event as it is open to everyone, including kids, and no matter the person’s fitness level,” says marketing executive Tanuja Gangabishun.

A band is required in order to have each run timed and to receive results for each event.

Once registered on myrun.org. za participants need to arrive at 7.30am with their QR code and the 010 492-5227

If you’re a die-hard fan of parkrun, end youth month the right way.

Over the past five years the number of Vitality members signing up for parkruns has continued to grow and between 2013 and 2017, members ran 9.9 million kilometres at parkruns around the country.

Says Dr Craig Nossel, head of Vitality Wellness: “Our aim of the partnership with parkrun is to build healthier communities one weekend at a time.

“Running does wonders in improving not only physical wellbeing, but also mental wellbeing.

“We at Vitality have seen how effective running is as a stepping stone to other healthy lifestyle behaviours, both at an individual and at a community level.”

It’s estimated that runners have a 30% to 50% reduced risk of cancer-related mortality and a 45% to 70% lower risk of cardiovascular-related mortality compared to non-runners.

Vitality members can take part in any of the 143 parkruns around the country and earn up to 300 points on completing the course.
